Colts start with win
KJM VARMA

COLOMBO, JANUARY 12: The Indian colts made a sound start to their title quest with an emphatic 122-run win over Bangladesh in the Youth World Cup Cricket Championship here on Wednesday.

The opening pair of Ravneet Rickey (61) and Manish Sharma (55) put on 131 runs for the first wicket to lay the foundation for India's challenging total of 235 for five in 50 overs at the Moratuwa Stadium, near here.

Minnows Bangladesh were then skittled out for 113 in 34.5 overs with Anup Dave scalping three wickets for 15 runs and Yuvraj Singh chipping in with two for six runs.

India skipper Mohammed Kaif made a stylish 30 and Neeraj Patel (31 not out) also came good to help the strong contenders notch up the easy win.

India now take on lowly Holland on January 14 at Matara.

In other group league matches, Pakistan thrashed Kenya by eight wickets, New Zealand beat Holland by 151 runs but strong South Africa had to see their good effort bear no fruit as their match against Nepal had to be abandoned due to rain.

Pakistan dismissed Kenya for 66 in 25 overs at Radella, about 50 km from here, and then scored 67 for two in 15.5 overs.

Kiwis made mincemeat of the Netherlands at the Matarauyanwatte Stadium after piling up 206 for six in 32 overs in a rain-curtailed match. Holland, in reply, were restricted to 55 for nine in 32 overs.

In the South Africa-Nepal tie, the Proteas, batting first, amassed 295 for five with J Rodolph slamming a splendid 156 followed by G Smith (74) at the Katunayake Stadium here.

Nepal in reply were 22 for four in 12 overs when rain interrupted. It will be replayed at a later date, organisers said -- (PTI).
