Gangster Gujjar escapes with police weapons
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 19: Western UP gangster and an associate of Madan Bhaiyya, Sanjay alias Bunty Gujjar, escaped from police custody near Modipuram on Tuesday and took the weapons of the police along with him.

The incident is reported to have occurred when the police party escorting him to Meeurt Jail, after an appearance at the Patiala House courts in New Delhi, stopped at a wayside eatery for lunch. The police team was allegedly overpowered by Bunty's associates and their weapons snatched.

All three policemen in charge of his security -- head constable Madan Pal Singh, constables Amar Singh and Naresh Kumar -- along with Balbir Singh who was behind the wheels of the anti-riot vehicle Vajra Vahan that the olice were using to ferry Gujjar, have been placed under suspension.

Bunty Gujjar had been nabbed in the Capital only two months ago due to his involvement in the abduction of businessman Swatantra Rastoggi, which later led to a shoot-out outside Ashoka Hotel in July. Gujjar's aide, SiriyaPahelwan, was shot dead in the encounter.

Gujjar was also involved in a sensational jailbreak in April 1999 at Bharatpur, Rajasthan, in which the jailer was killed. He has several cases of robbery, kidnapping and murder registered against his name and has the reputation among police circles of a desperate inter-state criminal.
