Riot over posters, 18 hurt in Nashik
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

MUMBAI, JANUARY 23: Eighteen persons, including a policeman, were injured in a riot between two groups of Muslims and firing by an individual late on Saturday in the old Nashik area. According to police the trouble started at around 11.00 pm when some persons were pasting posters on the walls of buildings. The posters pertained to a religious discourse by a Sunni sect preacher Allama Akhtar Raja Barelvi.

However, the family of Haji Allauddin, who runs a chain of sweet shops in Nashik, objected to the pasting of the posters. After an altercation, a family member is alleged to have resorted to indiscriminate firing from a first floor window of the building.

While a crowd collected at the spot, the firing from a .12 double bore rifle continued injuring people with its splinters. The police reached the site and brought the situation under control. The police later arrested four persons.
