Gajjar, Medini best among under-16s


MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 5: Rohan Gajjar (Jasudben) swamped third seed Jay Mehta (Cathedral) 6-1, 6-3 in the MSSA-Colgate Inter-school tennis final at the Garden Tennis Academy at Azad Maidan on Saturday.

Medini Sharma (Gyan Kendra) won the girls' under-16 crown beating Johann Fernandes (St Theresa's) 6-4, 6-2.

Anaheeta dazzles

Anaheeta Dhalla of Jaihind College gave the Grand finals of the Air-India SRAM Junior squash tournament the perfect start when she pulled off a sensational 3-1 win over fancied Rachita Vora to enter the girls' under-19 semi-finals at the CCI court, on Saturday.

Anaheeta, who took to squash only seven months ago, won her quarter-final at 9-7, 9-3, 3-9, 10-8 for her first major victory on the domestic circuit.

Bala XI triumph

Bala XI, Kurla, drubbed BMC 7-0 in a first-round tie of the Don Bosco Challenge Cupfootball tournament, conducted by Don Bosco Youth Centre, at the St Joseph's Technical ground, Kurla, on Saturday.

Kailash Thakur (2), Suresh Chinkate (2), Raj Watukula, Babala Jena and Mohan Aela netted for Bala XI.

Dixit stuns Saxena

Amit Dixit shocked second seed and FIDE-rated Vaibhav Saxena (ELO 2158) in the first-round of the Mumbai Division Selection chess tournament, conducted by the Bombay Chess Association, at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works canteen, on Saturday.

The eight top players from the 113 participants, in this nine-round Swiss league event, will qualify for the forthcoming State Selection tournament to be held at Nagpur.

MLWB, Naigaon best

MLWB, Naigaon A drubbed Ganesh CC 3-0 in the team championship final of the ninth Mumbai District carrom tournament, co-sponsored by Amco, BOI, BoB, HP, Saraswat Bank and Mumbai District Central Bank, at the Sharda Mangal Kriyalaya, Naigaon, on Saturday.

Easy for Hindalkar

Uday Hindalkar trounced Kiran Barve 25-0, 25-0 in a first-round tie of the first Thane District Ranking carrom tournament, conducted by Mukand Sports Club, on Saturday.
