Despite a 19-19 draw, and a tie (3-3) on points with Maharashtra, Services advanced due to better scores (82-81) compared to the hosts (71-71). Maharashtra's rearguard action after a 9-16 deficit proved futile. Qasim Shaikh, who once claimed four victims in one raid, still ended on the losing side. Solanki, two others lead
Top seed Vinod Solanki (MTNL), Vakil Akhtar and N Singarvelan kept their slate clean after five rounds in the Bombay Division Selection Chess tournament, organised by Bombay Chess Association, on Thursday. They jointly led with five points, after handing Milind Nevgi, Amol Wagle and Santosh Borkar respectively their first defeats. Amit Dixit outwitted FIDE-rated Prasad Deshmukh, while Prakash Date defeated another rated player Dinesh Bhandarkar. Both winners were placed second with 4.5 points.

Saurabh Sangvekar and Namrata Uttrakar won the Group VI individual titles in Dombivli Gymkhana's fourth Annual Aquatic Championship.
