TN lawyers call off stir
United News of India

Chennai, March 1: The advocates in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry called off their agitation on Wednesday and decided to attend courts from Thursday following a written assurance from Union Law Minister Ram Jethmalani that the amendments to the civil procedure code would not not be notified till discussions were held with the bar.

The decision to call of the agitation was taken at the general body meeting of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA), according to MHAA president P Jayaraman.

In his letter to bar council of India chairman S K Kaarvendhan, Jethmalani said, "any changes in the advocates act and the controversial CPC amendments will be fully discussed with the bar before any amendments are enforced".

The Bar Council of India decided to call off the agitation following this assurance and the advocates in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry also decided on the same lines.

The advocates were agitating since February 14 in protest against the amendments to the CPC and the proposed amendments to advocates act. Though they had decided to suspend the agitation on February 21 last, the Bar Council of India decided to continue the agitation till it got a written assurance from Jethmalani. Following this the MHAA on Tuesday decided to continue the agitation.
