MIC leak in Union Carbide plants led to tragedy -- CBI

BHOPAL, MARCH 8: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday produced documents showing the leakage of Methyl Iso-Cynate (MIC) from the Union Carbide Corporation Limited (UCIL) pesticide plants here as the cause of death of thousands of people on the intervening night of December 2 and 3 in 1984.

Deposing before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) court on the concluding day of the three-day hearing in the Bhopal gas tragedy criminal case here, prosecution witness and the then Assistant Sub-Inspector of Hanumanganj police station Daulat Singh and then Provisional Sub-Inspector of Station Bajaria G S Rajput testified the death of large number of people due to the leaking of MIC from UCIL plant. They produced several inquest reports prepared by them on that night.

CJM L D Borasee has fixed May 4 and 5 as the next date of the hearing. Daulat Singh stated that even though a ``chaotic'' condition was prevailng in the city at the time of the incident, his police station, situated two-three kilometres from the factory, received no information from UCIL regarding the leakage of MIC gas or on how to protect oneself.
