Cops attacked in Cuddalore dist, open fire on group
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

CHENNAI, MARCH 30: Tension prevailed in Kotteri village, near Vriddhachalam in Cuddalore district when police opened fire after they were attacked with weapons by a group on Tuesday night.

While two persons in the group sustained injuries following the firing, a head constable of the police who was attacked with deadly weapons was admitted to Vriddhachalam Government Hospital as an inpatient.

Police sources told The Indian Express that the incident occurred when a police team was on night patrol to keep a tab on activities of the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA). The team was checking vehicles passing by the area as Wednesday was the death anniversary of TNLA leader Lenin.

Mistaking the police party to be anti-social elements, a group of persons armed with sickles and other weapons attacked the police team, injuring head constable Varadharajan.

Sources said the team opened two rounds of fire in self defence. Oomangalam police have registered a case.
