Fijian premier among 29 to be honoured by Haryana govt

CHANDIGARH, APRIL 12: Fijian prime minister Mahender Chaudhary, whose origins can be traced to a sleepy village in Rohtak district, is among 29 prominent personalities of Haryana who will be honoured by the state government on the conclusion of tercentenary of birth of Khalsa tomorrow.

Chaudhary, who hails from village Bahu Jamalpur in Rohtak district, is among the personalities whom Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala will be honouring at a function at Yamunanagar tomorrow, officials here said.

The 29 recipients have been chosen for outstanding services in the fields of agriculture, social welfare, defence, sports and adventure, culture, industry, literature and floriculture, they said.

The other prominent persons to be honoured include mountaineer Santosh Yadav, cricketers Nawab Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Kapil Dev, wrestler Lila Ram, international hockey player Pritam Thakran, Kar sewa wale Baba Harbans Singh, astronaut Kalpana Chawla, noted actor Sunil Dutt, film producer Subhash Ghai, classical singers Pt Jasraj, Pt Tule Ram Sangi, Singh Bandu Tejpal Singh and Surender Singh, Nagada vadak Ustad Jahaman Khan.

Subhash Goyal of Zee TV, industrialists Raghuvender Singh, Ranjit Puri, poet Udaibhanu Hans, Hemraj Nirmam, author of several books and winner of state Sahitya Akademi award are among others who have been nominated for the honour.

The agriculture scientists to be honoured include Bhale Ram Mor who came up with 777 varieties of cotton and R L Kapur, inventor of HHB 67 variety of Bajra.
