UCBSA to probe Cronje's role in dramatic 5th Test
REUTERS

CAPE TOWN, APRIL 12: The United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) said on Wednesday that it would look into the role of sacked captain Hansie Cronje in the fifth Test match against England in January.

``UBBSA president Percy Sonn has confirmed that the last day of the Centurion Park Test would be covered in the inquiry as well as any other major points of suspicion,'' UCBSA Communications Director Bronwyn Wilkinson told Reuters.

The Test ended in high drama after the middle three days had been washed out. At Cronje's suggestion, both captains forfeited an innings to make it possible to avoid a draw.

In the event, England won by two wickets in a match hailed at the time as a ground-breaking result for cricket. Cronje was praised for his bold stance. South Africa won the series 2-1.

UCBSA Managing Director Ali Bacher said on Tuesday Cronje received between $³10,000 and $³15,000 during the first One-Day International between South Africa and Zimbabwe, three days after the conclusion of the fifth Test against England.

He said Constitutional Court Judge Albie Sachs would be asked to head a inquiry into corruption in the sport and Cronje's alleged involvement.
