Karunanidhi writes to Nayanar on dam issue
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

CHENNAI, APRIL 28: Tamil Nadu Government has to seek remedy from the Supreme Court on the issue of raising the Mullaiperiyar dam height to 152 ft from the existing 136 ft, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Friday.

Responding to his Kerala counterpart E K Nayanar's recent letter on this subject, Karunanidhi said the `adamant' attitude adopted by Kerala Government during the recent talks rejecting Tamil Nadu's plea to raise the dam height, had really "saddened and disappointed me".

"It was totally unexpected that an amicable solution could not be reached on the issue during our meetings held on April 5 at Thiruvananthapuram," Karunanidhi said in his reply to Nayanar's letter of April 24.

Karunanidhi said such an attitude would never see a solution to any problem and therefore, the Tamil Nadu Government was forced to seek legal remedy.

Referring to Nayanar's plea in his letter to prevent protests from Tamil nadu farmers on this issue, Karunanidhi said such spontaneous outbursts were only expected.

"However, I am eager to maintain cordial relations and harmony between the two states," Karunanidhi said.
