ONGC drub Companeroes

MUMBAI, APRIL 28: Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Dehra Dun, earned a second-round meeting with Mumbai's Air-India when they drubbed Bombay Super League cellar-side Companeroes 5-1 in the All-India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament at the Mahindra Stadium on Friday.

Nazir squandered a gilt-edged chance in the third minute but made amends for his earlier lapse by wresting the lead for ONGC in the 12th minute. He pushed home from close following a neat defence-splitting square pass from the left by Anwar from within the circle.

ONGC made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute following a defensive lapse. Defender Kayzin D'Souza needlessly held on to the ball for long inside the circle instead of clearing it. ONGC's Ranjit dispossesed him and beat goalkeeper Blaise Vessaoker, who had replaced Lucio, with an angular push to the goalkeeper's left.

The match was as good as over when ONGC struck a third time, three minutes later. Anwar's fierce forward shot deflected of a defender's leg to unmarked left-winger Fahad, who was positioned deep in the circle. Fahad trapped the ball and shot home in a jiffy.

Marcellus scored Camponeroes' consolation goal following a penalty-corner in the 51st minute. But the visitors hit back with a goal four minutes later through Nazir who made the most of a forwards pass by Anwar.

ONGC's Sandeep Sangwan rubbed salt into the local side's wounds when he rounded-off the tally with a goal almost on the call of time.

ERRATA: The goal scorer in the BHA Colts-MbPT match on Thursday was Ninson Mangeiath and not Girish Pimple as mentioned. The error is deeply regretted.
