Gowda worries about Ganga erosion in Bengal
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

FARAKKA (WB), APRIL 30: Janata Dal (S) leader and former prime minister H D Devegowda today expressed serious concern over erosion of banks along Ganga in Murshidabad and Malda districts of West Bengal and accused the BJP Government at the Centre of being indifferent to the problem.

Although he had sanctioned Rs 716 crore to prevent the erosion during his tenure as Prime Minister, the sanctioned money remained unused during the BJP rule for checking Ganga erosion in Malda and Murshidabad, Devegowda said at a public meeting organised by the Left Front here.

Devgowda visited the erosion-hit Brahmangram area of Farakka in Murshidabad district. State Irrigation Minister Debabarata Bandyopadhyay, CPI-M State secretary Anil Biswas were also present at the meeting. Erosion had affected 102-km bank along Farkka-Jalangi in Murshidabad and areas like Manikchak and Bhutni in Malda.
