WB minister succumbs to burns, enquiry on
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA


CALCUTTA, MAY 1: West Bengal Commerce and Industry Minister Bidyut Ganguly died of severe burn injuries at the SSKM hospital here early today, Health Minister Partha De said. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

De told PTI that Ganguly was rushed to the state-run hospital last night from his Bhatpara residence in North-24 Parganas district in a critical condition with 95 per cent burns.

Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said that the police was asked to submit a detailed inquiry report on the cause of his death.

CPI-M State Secretary and Politburo member Anil Biswas in a statement however said, ``Police is investigating the case. After getting the post-mortem report, we shall be able to know the cause of his death. For the last few months, he has been suffering from depression.''

The 64-year-old Ganguly, representing the Bhatpara assembly constituency since 1991, was the Chairman of the local municipality for a record 23 years.
