Wife accused of magic spell on husband wins appeal

DUBAI, MAY 11: A United Arab Emirates (UAE) teacher sentenced to four months in jail for casting a spell on her former husband and his sister won an appeal, a local newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Gulf News quoted a senior court official as saying that the appeal court in Sharjah, one of seven Emirates in the UAE, had concluded that the "physical and psychological ailments" of the man and his sister had nothing to do with his ex-wife's visit to a magician in neighbouring Oman.

The court did declare that it was wrong for the woman to have visited the magician to "restore her relationship" with her ex-husband.

The man had told the court that he and his sister discovered they were possessed by demons after seeking medical treatment both home and abroad for a number of undiagnosed illnesses. He said an Omani magician cast the spell after his former wife sought his help to get revenge for the divorce.

In the original trial, the Islamic Shariah court said the defendant admitted to visiting the magician once and later sending messages to him through her driver.

The paper quoted a court official as saying that many Arab women visited people they believed to be magicians whenever they found themselves in trouble.
