Basu calls for prevention of nuke power misuse
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

CALCUTTA, MAY 21: West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu on Sunday called upon Commonwealth Parliamentarians to ensure that the two new nuclear powers in the Commonwealth do not engage themselves in mass killing and destruction.

"With the emergence of two new nuclear powers in the Commonwealth, it is now the responsibility of the Parliamentarians to ensure that nuclear power is not used for mass killing and destruction, but for peaceful purposes only'', the Marxist Chief Minister said. He was inaugurating the "First Regional Conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Branches in Asia and South East Asia Regions" here on Sunday.

Instead of the dreaded use of nuclear powers, Basu felt the need for a concerted effort by all right-thinking forces and people's representatives to strive for eradication of poverty, illiteracy and diseases, besides meeting all the basic needs of the people.

Basu also said it had become imperative for the affected nations to discuss the problem of terrorism.
