London, July 2: Martina Navratilova's return to her beloved Centre Court at Wimbledon ended in defeat when she and Mahesh Bhupathi were beaten in the first round of the mixed doubles.

Success in the women's doubles with South African de Swaardt, who was last year's runner-up with Ukraine's Elena Tatarkova, would put Navrtilova level with Billie Jean King's record of 20 Wimbledon titles.
