Indians shine in sixth-round
Express News Service

Mumbai, July 13: The Indian team of blind chess players had a good day in the sixth round of the first World Cup Chess championship, being played at the Benasque, Spain on Thursday.

According to the information received here, Charudatta Jadhav and Madan Bagayatkar scored victories to secure their third point each. For Madan, who was playing with black pieces, victory over Tulio of Honduras was the most apt gift he could have sought on his birthday. His third win of the tournament meant that if he had not those blunder from winning position in the earlier rounds, he could have been among the leaders.

Charudatta Jadhav faced a tactical attack from Lopez of Spain. Jadhav responded with a counter attack in a Kings Indian Defence game. He ultimately won the game in 39 moves.

Vilesh, playing with black pieces, drew his match against Mejias of Andorra. He now has 2.5 ponts.

Shirish Patil, playing with black pieces, lost his game against Staubach of Germany to remain on two points.

With three more rounds to go, top seed Larduet (Cuba), third-seed Yatsishin (Ukrain), fifth-seed Sudar (Poland), and 10th seed Gunajew (Poland) are leading jointly with five points each.

Second seed Tamayo (Cuba), unseeded Konev (Ukrain), 15th-seed Pohlers (Germany) and 17th-seed Lindenmair (Germany) are jointly on the second position half-a-point behind the leaders at 4.5 points a piece.

There was another reason for Indians to celebrate. The coach of the Indian team, SR Mohandas, who is on the championship Appeals Committee, was recommended for IBSA International Chess Arbiter by the Technical Sub-Committee.

Results of top five players (Round VI): Tamayo (4.5) drew with Larduet (5), Aguilar (4) lost to Yatsishin (5), Dobierzin (4) lost to Sudar (5), Gunajew (5) beat Qadiri (4), Bischoff (3.5) lost to Konev (4.5).

Results of Indian players (Round VI): Tulio lost to Madan Bagayatkar, Charudatta Jadhav beat Lopez, Mejias drew with Vilesh Bhatt, Staubach beat Shishir Patil.
