12 Russians killed in Chechen attack

Gudermes, July 17: Atleast 12 Russian soldiers were killed in a Chechen attack in the south of the rebel republic, Russian defence sources in Chechnya told AFP today.

A Chechen spokesman had earlier claimed that the rebels had killed 43 Russian troops. Officially, Russia's military has so far denied that any of its soldiers died overnight in the strikes, which began yesterday in Chechen-Aul.
