21-yr-old Indian is among America's Most Wanted
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

VANCOUVER, JULY 30: The face of Ninderjit Singh Soos, 21, is now perhaps a familiar one across the US and Canada. ``This is Ninderjit Singh dancing in one of the festivals, but do not go by his dance movements. He is wanted in the murder of his ex-girlfriend Poonam Randhawa,'' boomed the voice of host John Walsh, at the beginning of the July 22 episode of America's Most Wanted.

Singh, who is on the run, fled Canada soon after allegedly pumping a bullet in the head of Poonam Randhawa, in a lane near John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver, where they both studied.

The incident happened two days after Randhawa turned 18 and it has been 18 months since that fateful day. According to reports, Soos had courted Randhawa for nearly a year, but she told no one about it, not even her friends and family. But when Randhawa could not handle Soos's advances, she moved to another school and also changed her home phone number.

Perhaps nothing daunted Soos, who stalked her for months. Randhawa, surprisingly, maintained a studied silence over the whole story. On January 26 last year she got into Soos' car during the lunch break and never returned. Randhawa's friends and family are still baffled as to why she went out with Soos that afternoon. According to police, a single shot ran through her head barely 30 minutes after she got into his Cambie. Her body was found dumped in a nearby lane.

Soos, also known as Bira Singh, soon fled the Canada and entered the US, where he was nearly nabbed in San Jose. He, however, gave the police a slip minutes before they knocked on his friend's house.

Police also believe that Soos might have changed his appearance and now might look different from the short-haired, clean-shaven Soos that the police are looking for.

The authorities also believe that Soos' mother might have a clue about his whereabouts but is not speaking.

After the Randhawa killing, premier Ujjal Dosanjjh, who was then attorney general of British Columbia, appealed to the South Asian teenagers to report incidents of sexual harassment to family and police.

The police say they received half a dozen tips within a day of the TVprogramme. According to a spokesperson for America's Most Wanted, five tips within a day are ``pretty good,'' as one of them could lead to an arrest.

``We hope somebody in America will spot him and give either America's Most Wanted a call or contact us,'' said a spokesperson for the Canadian police.
