Delhi court discharges Harshad Mehta in bribery case
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

NEW DELHI, JULY 31: A Delhi court today discharged Big Bull Harshad Mehta from charges of bribing former Steel Authority of India (SAIL) chairman V. Krishnamoorty in a bid to seek favour from his son in the K.J. Investment group.

Special judge V.B. Gupta cleared Mehta from the case at the time of framing of the charges saying prima facie, no case could be made out against him on the basis of evidence on record.

The CBI had earlier accused Mehta of giving Rs 32.74 lakh as bribe to Krishnamoorthy to seek favours from his son who was a director in K.J. Investments. But Mehta's counsel Rebacca John and Akshay Bipin claimed the money was advanced to him as advance payment for purchase of shares of K.J. Investments.

John further said that Krishnamurthy later returned the amount to Mehta.

The judge, after recording of statement of Mehta's counsel, dismissed the case even before the CBI had filed the charge-sheet.
