Jardel stars as Galatasaray win European Super Cup
Monaco, August 26: Mario Jardel hit a golden goal winner to earn a 2-1 victory for the Turkish side Galatasaray over Real Madrid in the European Super Cup here. It also meant European Cup champions Madrid were prevented from winning the only title available to them that they have never won in this match against the UEFA Cup winners. Okan Buruk received a yellow card in the seventh minute for a foul on Roberto Carlos, running down the left wing in the first action of note in the match, played in a sweltering heat of almost 40 degrees celsius. Madrid's French midfielder Claude Makelele earned ayellow card in the 19th minute for a tackle in a first half marked by numerous fouls. A couple of minutes later Raul, named best striker on the continent by European football's governing body UEFA swivelled and shot left-footed to just miss the target from the edge of the penalty area. Ivan Helguera fouled Okan from behind after 32 minutes to earn an yellow card from Austrian referee Gunter Benko. Though Turkey's goal was under siege, an on-form TaffarelD A well-organised Turkish defence was keeping Madrid at bay. Bulent Akin had a shot from 20M Just before Jardel putGalatasaray in the lead from the spot in the 41st minute against the run of play. Okan Buruk fed Hakan Unsal, who ran into the area and wastripped with a clumsy tackle by defender Ivan Campo for a clear penalty. Jardel stepped up and scored his 10th goal in just fivematches for the Istanbul club since signing from Portuguese side Porto. In the second half, the Turks, again against the run ofplay, should have scored but the flash shot by skipper Bulent Korkmaz from six metres went wide. Raul had a fabulous chance from the area of the penaltyspot but his left-footed failed to find the target. Then came Madrid's goal which changed the complexion ofthe game. Referee Benko adjudged a penalty from the left had hit the arm of a Turkish defender and he pointed to the spot. Raul fired a powerful shot high to the centre of the goal as Taffarel dived to his right for the equaliser. Then came Jardel's goal. He latched on to a cross from the right to score from the edge of the six metre box to prompt jubilation in the Turkish camp. Six injured in jubiliation The festivities turned sour when three people in western and northwestern Turkey were wounded by stray bullets as fans fired shots into the air. In the coastal city Izmir on the Aegean coast, a 35-year-old woman was hit in the arm while walking in the street and a 14-year-old girl sustained a shoulder injury from a stray bullet as she watched the festivities from the roof of her home, Anatolia News Agency reported. A 22-year-old woman was also shot in the foot in the North western city of Adapazari, the agency added. Turkish football fans are notorious for firing shots into the air to celebrate their team's victory. Decks cleared for Middlesbrough The former Liverpool player -- included in Kevin Keegan's England squad for the next weekend's friendly against France in Paris -- has been left in no doubt that his future lies away from the Spanish giants following the world record purchase of Luis Figo. McManaman was omitted from the squad which travelled to Monaco for last night's Super Cup defeat by Galatasaray. The England star's options appeared to be limited with Chelsea boss Gianluca Vialli ruling out a move for him on Saturday saying that Real's asking price was too high. But the price did not scare off big-spenders Middlesbrough although they still have to persuade the player that the north east of England is the place to relaunch his career. ``We approached Real about Steve and they have accepted our offer,'' said Boro assistant boss Viv Anderson.
