President okays 3 Statehood bills
NEW DELHI, AUG 28: The process of formation of new states gathered momentum today with President K R Narayanan giving formal assent to the three Statehood Bills passed by Parliament for the creation of Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal and Jharkhand. The three Acts will come into force from the date of Gazette notification by the Centre in consultation with these states, an official release said here. The Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2000 seeks to carve out a separate state of Chhattisgarh from Madhya Pradesh, while the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2000 seeks to form Uttaranchal out of Uttar Pradesh, it said. The Bihar Reorganisation Act 2000 seeks to reconstitute Bihar to carve out the separate state of Jharkhand out of it, the release said. The Acts provide for the territories of the new states and make necessary supplemented and incidental provisions relating to representation in Parliament and in the state legislatures, distribution of revenues, appointment of assets and liabilities, management and development of water resources, it said. Under the Acts, there would be separate High Courts for the new states, it said, adding that the existing Bench of Patna High Court at Ranchi would be converted and the new enlarged High Court is to be called the Jharkhand High Court.
