Floods in Bihar claim 89 lives
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

PATNA, SEPT 23: The death toll in the current spate of floods in Bihar shot up to 89 today with nine deaths reported from Munger and Shekhpura as swollen rivers continued to engulf fresh areas following torrential rains in their catchment areas.

Six deaths were reported from Munger and three from Shekhpura following inundation in fresh places of these two areas, besides in Sitamarhi, Kahalgaon and Lakhisarai due to heavy rains, state relief department sources said.

Nearly four million people have been hit by the floods in 21 districts of the state and standing crops and houses worth over Rs 50 crore have so far been damaged, the sources said.

Railway sources said train services on Jamalpur-Munger and Jamalpur-Bhagalpur sections of eastern railway have been suspended or are being diverted through alternative routes following inundation of the railway tracks.
