Corporator arrested on graft charges

MUMBAI, SEPT 23: Hamida Mistry, a sitting lady corporator of the Samajwadi Party was caught red-handed by the Anti- Corruption Bureau(ACB) today for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a builder.

According to ACB sources, the contractor, Khalid Sufi Haji Qureshi had done some repair work in a building at Mohammed Ali Road and his outstanding dues of Rs one lakh was with the MHADA. However, the corporator in question had said that his payment would not be cleared till he gave her Rs 50,000, sources said. But the contractor said that he could pay only Rs 10,000 to which the corporator agreed.

On Friday evening, however, the contractor met Mistry in the Municipal Headquarters building, and handed over the sum, to her. However she was immediately arrested by officers of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, who were lying in wait for her. She was released on bail today.
