Hyundai gifts car to Karnam Malleswari

HYDERABAD, October 14: The first Indian women Olympic medallist Karnam Malleswari was presented a car by the Hyundai Motor India Ltd at a function here on Saturday evening.

Malleswari, who returned to her home state after winning a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics, was felicitated by the state government with a civic reception at the Fateh maidan stadium yesterday where Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced a cash award of Rs ten lakh, a house site at posh Jubilee hills and also agreed to provide land for her to set up a sport academy.

Speaking to reporters, Malleswari said she was excited and felt immensely happy at the reception given by the state government and praised the chief minister for his efforts in encouraging sports.

YS Kim, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India Ltd said this was the beginining of the company's involvement in sports arena. ``We recognise and encourage sporting talents.''

T Seetharam, sports minister who presented the key of the car to Malleswari, said the state government with the active participation of corporate sector proposed to introduce sports activity at primary level all over the state.
