Narain, a 1965 batch officer, earned a name for successfully tackling communal riots in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh as District Magistrate.

He has held various senior positions at the Centre and also in the state as secretary to the chief minister and principal secretary to the Governor, an official release said here.

At the Centre, Narain served as surface transport secretary and chairman of National Highways Authority of India before taking charge as UP chief secretary in April 1998. He was also founder chairman of the Greater NOIDA Industrial Development Authority.

His other assignments include being a district magistrate and later commissioner of Lucknow.
