Jacques Kallis guides South Africa to a big total
BLOEMFONTEIN, NOV 18: South Africa declared their first innings on 471 for nine on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand on Saturday. Earlier, New Zealand fought hard in the first session dismissing both overnight batsmen in a shortened session. At lunch South Africa were 305 for five, adding only 35 runs for the loss of two wickets. Kallis was out for 160 and McKenzie for 55, with Shayne O'Connor and Chris Martin taking the wickets. A wet outfield after heavy overnight rain delayed the start and only an hour of play was possible. Kallis added only seven runs to his overnight 153. He seemed unlucky to be given out caught behind by Indian umpire Arani Jayaprakash when he was beaten by a ball from left-arm fast bowler O'Connor. Wicketkeeper Adam Parore did not join in the appeal and Kallis seemed astonished when he was given out. Replays indicated he had not edged the ball. Kallis batted for 345 minutes, faced 289 balls and hit 26 fours in his career-best innings. McKenzie reached his maiden Test fifty before he was caught behind off Martin. He hit 11 boundaries in his three-hour innings and faced 134 balls.
