Gunmen raid Egyptian bank, 13 killed

CAIRO, NOV 21: Armed gunmen snatched over onemillion Egyptian pounds in a bank raid on Tuesday which Left 13 people dead, officials said.

Security sources said four masked attackers armed withautomatic weapons raided a branch of the National Bank of Egypt in the town of Maragha, 450 km (280 miles) South of Cairo.

The Interior ministry said in a statement the raidersoriginally targeted the next-door Banque Misr but were driven off by security guards. One policeman was killed.

The gunmen then ran into the National Bank, where twopolicemen, two bank employees and one of the attackers were killed. A second robber was wounded and died later in police custody, security sources said.

The gunmen fled with 1.3 million pounds ($340,000) in apick-up van, firing at random at passers-by. Eleven were wounded and six of them died later from their injuries, including a 12-year-old boy, according to security sources.

There was no word on the identity of the attackers.
