Car, comm. vehicles, scooters, bike exports up; Maruti down

NOV 26: Declaring domestic sales failed to impact the overseas market as exports of `Made-in-India' vehicles went up in the global market during April-October.

All the segments except multi-utility vehicles (MUVs) and three-wheelers posted an impressive growth in exports during the period, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Car exports went up by 9.7 per cent to 11,207 units against 10,223 units in the year-on-year period even as market leader Maruti Udyog recorded a 14 per cent dip in exports at 8,059 units against 9,360 units in the same period last year.

The Indian unit of ailing South Korean automaker Daewoo Motor Company, posted a 268 per cent growth at 1,287 units in the review period as against 350 units in the year-ago period.

Hyundai Motor India, which started exports this year, sold 1,549 cars in the overseas market while Tata Engineering (TELCO) posted a 337 per cent growth at 262 units during April-October this year.

However, exports of multi-utility vehicles (MUVs) fell 13 per cent to 2,182 units during April-October from 2,497 units in the same period last fiscal.

All the MUV makers like TELCO, Hindustan Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra recorded a negative export growth.

Commercial vehicle exports went up by 79 per cent to 7,416 units during the period under review compared to 4,137 units last year mainly on account of a 182 per cent rise in light commercial vehicles (LCV) segment.

Medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCV) exports increased 9.3 per cent to 2,672 units during April-October 2000-01 from 2,444 units in the year-ago period.

Market leader TELCO recorded a 1.8 per cent exports growth at 1,501 units from 1,475 units in the year-on-year period while Ashok Leyland exported 1,095 units, up 22.1 per cent against 897 units during the same period last year.

In the LCV segment, exports rose to 4,774 units against 1,693 units last year. TELCO dominated LCV exports at 4,224 units, a jump of 244 per cent, against 1,227 units last year.

Riding on good performance by LML, Kinetic Motor Company and Bajaj Auto, scooter exports increased by 48 per cent to 16,540 units during April-October. Exports of LML pegged at 6,037 units, up 98 per cent as against 3,043 units last year.

Kinetic had an export growth of 33 per cent to 5,904 units from 4,450 units last year while Bajaj exported 4,239 units, an increase of 27 per cent over last year's 3,334 units.

Motorcycle exports increased 35 per cent to 25,202 units from 18,665 units in April-October 1999-2000 with Yamaha Motor Escorts achieving the highest exports at 13,429 units, an increase of 66 per cent over 8,077 units last year.

Hero Honda exported 5,753 units, up 13.5 per cent against 5,081 units in 1999-2000 while Bajaj Auto had an exports growth of 13 per cent at 3,437 units (3,027 last year).

Exports of mopeds also increased by 144 per cent to 27,689 units while those of three-wheelers dipped 35 per cent to 8,081 units during the review period.
