Das, Sodhi in for one-dayers
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

NAGPUR, NOVEMBER 27: New Indian coach John Wright's suggestion to try youngsters in the one-day series against Zimbabwe and the selectors' stamp of approval to this in the nearly two-hour marathon meeting of the National selectors cost Robin Singh his place in the side.

The selectors decided to drop Singh and Vinod Kambli, while Punjab all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Shiv Sunder Das got the nod for the first three one-dayers. Paceman Javagal Srinath was not considered because he opted out of the one-dayers, while leg-spinner Anil Kumble will miss the entire series because of the injury.

Addressing mediamen, Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary J Y Lele and chairman of selectors Chandu Borde said, ``the name of Robin Singh was discussed in the meeting but we want to try a few youngsters against Zimbabwe.''

Borde said, ``I am a great admirer of Robin. He is a good cricketer but this would be a stepping stone for the youngsters. We can always call him back for the remaining two one-dayers''.

Regarding Srinath, Lele said the paceman himself told the chairman of selectors and the captain not to consider him for the one-dayers. ``Chopra's strike rate in one-dayers is very good and this was the reason he was selected ahead of Ashish Kapoor, whose name was also discussed,'' Borde said.

Asked whether Das' inclusion would see reshuffling in the opening pair, Lele said Das would bat in the middle order only.
