Minister grilled over stopping of scheme

NAGPUR, DEC 4: Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Datta Meghe was today grilled in the Legislative Assembly by opposition Shiv Sena and BJP members on the issue of scrapping of the Zunka-Bhakar scheme of the earlier government.

Replying to questions by Hemendra Mehta and others, Meghe said a decision to stop this scheme was taken on June 2000 and accordingly orders were issued to take back the places which were given for setting up the Zunka Bhakar centres.

However, some owners of the centres moved the Mumbai High Court and now the matter is pending in the court, he said.

The Leader of the Opposition Narayan Rane asked as to why this scheme was stopped and what would happen to the people who were employed in the centres.

Meghe said the aim of the centres was to provide food at subsidised rates to the poor people and not provide employement.

The members then grilled the Minister asking him to explain what will happen to the people who have invested their money in such centres.

The Minister said he would inquire into this aspect.
