Postal services to be disrupted from 6 am tomorrow
NEW DELHI, DEC 4: Postal employees across the country will go on an indefinite strike from Tuesday seeking higher wages and other benefits as recommended by Justice Talwar Committee. "We condemn the decision of the government pressing for withdrawl of strike notice before consideration of our demands. We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from 6 am tomorrow," representatives of the three postal unions told newsmen here today. National Federation of Postal Employees, Federation of National Postal Organisation and the Bhartiya Postal Employees Federation, claiming a total strength of over six lakh employees, said the government had not honoured the bilateral settlement reached on May 1, 2000. The anomalies in the pay structure of non-gazetted postal employees after the Fifth Pay Commission must be removed, V S Yadav, Secretary General of BPEF said. Justice Talwar Committee had recommended that the extra-departmental (ED) employees should be given pension benefits and "we are asking government to implement all these recommendations immediately," Yadav said. Other demands include upgradation of wage scales of non-gazetted employees and implementation of wage revision with effect from 1996 instead of 1997, he added.
