Aurangabad civic chief resumes duty
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

AURANGABAD, DEC 21: Muncipal Commissioner S D Jahagirdar of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation who went on leave after some corporators abused him, has been directed by the court to resume duty. The municipal chief joined duty on Tuesday after a apology from the 87-member corporation.

Jahagirdar, who was the third municipal commissioner in less than eighteen months, had gone on long leave within a month of his appointment in September, when he was abused by one of the corporators at a general body meeting.

It is alleged that the corporators had been involved in a confrontation with Jahagirdar's predecessor, Haldeo Singh, as well after he swooped on illegal constructions by top builders in the town.

However, it must be said that while corporators take blame for frequent confrontations and consequent transfers of municipal commissioners, the involvement of local MLAs cannot be ruled out altogether.

Earlier, the Aurangabad division bench of the Bombay High Court in a suo motu gesture, had last Friday, summoned Aurangabad Divisional Commissioner V Ramani, and Mayor Dr B K Karad, to know why the municipal commissioner was not in place and the steps being initiated by the state government to ensure that the post was occupied.

A calm and composed Jahagirdar, on Wednesday, talking to The Indian Express, said he would let bygones be bygones.
