Scribes stage dharna in Imphal
IMPHAL, DEC 26: About 100 journalists of Manipur today staged a sit-in dharna here today in protest against the alleged police atrocities on them and demanding action against the police personnel involved in the atrocities. The dharna was held under the aegis of the the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), the apex body of the media persons of the state and was led by AMWJU president K Madhumangol Singh. Singh told PTI that the Union would continue its agitation till their demands were fulfilled. He alleged that such kind of incidents had occured innumerable Times in the past. Negotiations were held and assurances were given by the state government several Times that action would be taken against erring policemen. But no concrete action had been initiated by the government so far to safeguard to interests of the journalists, Singh alleged, AMWJU office bearers had submitted a memorandum to Manipur Chief Minister, W. Nipamacha Singh on Sunday last informing the government about the alleged atrocities against the journalists which had taken place during this month and demanding appropriate government action to safeguard the freedom of the press.
