Sion Hospital finally decides to rectify `mistake' MUMBAI, JAN 1: Two months after the surgery performed by inexperienced resident doctors punctured 20-year-old Rabiya Sheikh's oesophagus at Sion Hospital, a glimmer of hope has finally dawned for her. The Dean of the civic-run medical facility, A.R. Fernandes, told The Indian Express that a surgeon has already been assigned to explore the possibilty of corrective surgery. Sheikh was admitted to the hopital after she swallowed acid that corroded her oesophagus. The surgery, on October 25, was performed by resident doctors who forced a severely constricted dialator down her throatm thereby perforating her oesophagus (The Indian Express, December 28). She has since being fed through a ``feeding jejunostomy'', or a bag that has been attached to her abdomen. The hopital however, kept Sheikh in the dark for two months, leaving her wondering why she suddenly had to be fed through a bag. Doctors at the hospital confide that this could be a permanent condition unless the damaged portion is replaced with a part of the intestine. Since the media highlighted the case, the hospital has now decided to take remedial measures. Fernandes says a decision on further surgery will be taken after the general surgeon studies the case.
