Minister's house attacked, DSP escapes bid on life
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

SRINAGAR, JAN 13: Militants attacked the house of Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar and made an abortive bid on the life of a police officer in Jammu and Kashmir where six militants were among eight people killed in separate incidents since last night.

Pro-Pakistan Al-Umer-Mujahideen ultras hurled two grenades at the house of Minister for Works at Nawab Bazar in downtown Srinagar last night, the second such attack on a Minister's house in the past three days in the state, official sources said here today.

Sagar was not at his house when the grenades exploded, they said, adding none was injured.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Vinay Kumar Gupta escaped unhurt when militants detonated a landmine at Palhalan in North Kashmir this morning damaging his vehicle, the sources said.

Gupta's bodyguards travelling in the vehicle also escaped unhurt in the explosion which took place at around 11 am.

Two Lashker-e-Toiba militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Surankote in Jammu region's Poonch district.

The slain ultras hailed from Afghanistan, the sources said, adding some arms and ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Two militants were killed in a gun battle with Rashtriya Rifles at Turkpora in frontier district of Kupwara. One of the killed ultras was identified as Abu Syed Mayam of Pakistan.

A Pakistani intruder was killed when army troops foiled an infiltration bid in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district.
