El Salvador quake claims 138

SAN SALVADOR, JAN 14: The death toll in a major earthquake which rocked Central America reached 138 today, with most of them being in El Salvador. Authorities feared the toll could rise further after a landslide near the capital buried some 260 houses.

The strength of the quake, which happened at 2303 hrs IST on Friday was estimated at between 7.4 and 7.9 on the Richter scale.

Rescue officials said that at least 136 people were killed in El Salvador and at least two in Guatemala. More than 1,200 were missing and 500 were injured by the quake, which caused significant damage.
