Syed Nayeemuddin resigns as East Bengal coach
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

Kolkata. Jan 14: Syed Nayeemuddin has resigned as the East Bengal coach owning moral responsibility for the club’s dismal showing in the recent Durand Cup and Rovers Cup football tournaments.

Nayeemuddin, who announced his decision last night, said that the lacklustre performance by the team prompted him to take such a decision. “I don’t want to offer excuses like missing some frontline players in Mumbai. I take responsibility for the poor showing,” Nayeem said.

East Bengal club has re-appointed Manoranjan Bhattacharya as the coach with immediate effect, the club’s president, Dr Pronab Dasgupta said. Bhattacharya had coached the team for a brief period in 1998. Nayeem said he was planning to take up the instructor’s role of the Asian Football Confederation, but at the same time he was also open to offers from other clubs.
