Kuwait high court dismisses women's rights case
JAN 16: Kuwait's highest court dismissed a closely watched case on Tuesday brought by a man seeking full political rights for women. The Constitutional Court rejected the case presented by Adnan al-Isa. Legal experts said that it had failed to meet some procedural requirements. The Constitutional Court last year also dismissed on procedural grounds cases by women protesting against the country's election law, which bans them from voting or running in parliamentary elections. Isa, 54, had complained against the annual registering in his constituency which in February refused to admit five women as eligible voters. Isa's lawyer, Kawther al-Joua'N, a woman activist who wears a headdress in line with Muslim code, had said the case was seeking a ruling by the court on the first article of the election law, hoping the judges would find it unconstitutional. Women activists have other cases before Kuwaiti courts as part of their campaign to gain rights for women, who are the most emancipated in the Muslim conservative Gulf Arab region.
