Espionage ring in Rajasthan busted, 1 held
JAIPUR, JAN 16: Rajasthan Police today said they have busted a Pakistani espionage ring allegedly involving some serving army personnel with the arrest of a Karachi-based resident here. The alleged spy, Mohammad Shahid, was nabbed by police on January 14 at the inter-state roadways bus stand, inspector general (intelligence) K L Bairwa said. Shahid's interrogation has revealed that some serving army personnel were also involved in the racket. They allegedly provided him with information and documents, Bairwa said, adding the army has been informed. The accused - operating from Jaipur, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad - used to send sensitive information regarding the deployment, movement and training of the Indian troops to intelligence officials in Pakistan, Bairwa said. While activities of one of his brothers, Wahid, who lives in Nepal, are said to be `doubtful', the other brother, Javed, is reported to have played an active role in espionage activities, he said. Bairwa said Shahid was given a two-year training in espionage activities in Karachi by Pakistani intelligence agencies, and he arrived in Meerut via Delhi in July last year. Police have registered a case against the accused under the Official Secrets Act. He was produced before a local court here yesterday which remanded him to police custody till January 20.
