Bush senior to go to Kuwait for celebrations
WASHINGTON, JAN 23: Former US president George Bush, the father of President George W. Bush, will attend celebrations in Kuwait marking the 10th anniversary of the end of the Gulf War, the Kuwaiti embassy revealed on Monday. The former president, who led the military campaign to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait, is the most prominent of 46 Americans who have accepted invitations to the celebrations on Feb. 26, according to a list released by the embassy. After the elder Bush visited Kuwait in 1993, Kuwait and the United States accused Iraq of trying to assassinate him. Bill Clinton, who was US President at the time, responded with cruise missile attacks on Iraqi targets. Other notable participants in the celebrations will be Gen.Norman Schwartzkopf, the commander of allied forces in the campaign, and Gen. Anthony Zinni, until recently the commander of US forces in the Middle East. Former President Bush's Chief of staff, John Sununu, and a former US Ambassador to Kuwait, Edward Gnehm, are also on the list. No prominent members of the new Bush administration are on the list but the embassy said it was not final. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
