After shock
The stunned faces of the survivors of Friday’s earthquake, the injured crying in pain, the dead and the dying, anxious relatives awaiting endlessly for news of missing family members and friends, images like these from Gujarat will long remain in our collective consciousness.




Look who’s talking
Thank goodness for little mercies, at least somebody is keeping count. Among the rash of challenges and dangers facing India in its 51st year as a republic, the President of this great land has found a silver lining.




How many gods, Yajnavalkya?
Besides the caste system and dowry deaths, the biggest issue that a modern Hindu is taunted about (and cannot handle) is the so-called pantheon or galaxy of gods. It seems so un-chic and uncool, so irrational and embarrassing to one’s self-image, plead most.
