Visitors Centrally placed after Day I
Panaji, February 1: Central Zone were 178 for two in their first innings after bowling out South Zone for 141 on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy match here today. After Central skipper Amay Khurasia (51) was caught by Vijay Bharadwaj off Aashish Kapoor and J P Yadav run out for eight, opener Gagan Khoda (batting 87: 10x4s, 3x6s) and Mohammad Kaif (batting 28) took charge and contributed an unbroken 72 runs for the third wicket. Earlier, electing to bat South were dismissed for a paltry 141 shortly after lunch as they could not face the pace attack of Devendra Bundela (4/58) and J P Yadav (3/46). South, who were led by stand-by captain VVS Laxman as Rahul Dravid was reportedly down with flu, made a poor start losing their first wicket for just 17 runs. They lost wickets at regular intervals and were 62-5 before Bharadwaj (50) and Sunil Joshi (17) came to their team’s rescue with a 42-run stand for their sixth wicket to take the score to 104-6 before being all out off 42.5 overs.Central wicketkeeper Rohit Jalani, who made his debut, had five victims to his credit.
