ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU

NEW DELHI, FEB 4: The government has decided to lift import restrictions on major intermediates penicillin, rifampicin and 6-APA which will have a far reaching impact on domestic manufacturers. These items will be removed from the negative list of imports.

The commerce ministry has turned down the request of department of chemicals and petrochemicals to maintain import restriction on these three intermediates.Industry sources say domestic manufacturers may be forced to lower prices as imports would be much cheaper than prevailing domestic prices.

Major domestic manufacturers include Torrent Gujarat Biotech, JK Pharmachem Ltd, SPIC and Hindustan Max GB Ltd and Lupin Chemicals.
