PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

FEB 11: While there were reports of some prisoners fleeing Bhuj jail after the earthquake, inmates in Central Tihar Jail here have contributed Rs four lakh to the Prime Minister's relief fund besides expressing readiness to donate blood for the injured undergoing treatment.

"The inmates have contributed Rs four lakh to the PM's relief fund and 2200 of them have made commitments to donate blood to the victims," Tihar's Director General (Prison) Ajay Aggarwal said at the `Mahapanchayat', a general meeting of the inmates.

Highlighting various achievements of the inmates and steps taken by the authorities to improve their condition, he said they had shared the nation's concern like other citizens.

This was not the first time that the prisoners had been involved in providing quake relief. They had contributed over Rs three lakh for welfare of Kargil martyrs and over Rs one lakh to the victims of Orissa cyclone last year.

During the Mahapanchayat, the inmates discuss their problems with jail authorities and even make candid suggestions regarding changes they felt were needed to develop "positive qualities" among the inmates.
