New Delhi, Feb 18: The country's busiest port at Kandla, which was affected by last month's devastating earthquake in Gujarat, has become fully operational with all the 10 dry cargo berths and four oil jetties back into handling operations.

"All the 10 dry cargo berths and four oil jetties, except oil jetty no.1, are back into handling operations. Kandla Port Trust is fully operational," a KPT spokesperson told PTI.

At present 10 vessels are working at dry cargo berths, comprising seven export cargo, two import cargo and one container vessel. Two tankers are docked at oil jetties, he said, adding "there are no vessels waiting for both cargo berths and oil jetties."

However, certain berthing and working restrictions have been imposed for the vessels berthing at cargo berths one to six. Rice, wheat, soya, sugar, fertilisers, raw material, coal and other similar bulk cargo would only be handled at berth numbers one to six.

Timber logs, steel coils, project cargo, over dimension cargo, loaded container, various scraps, granite blocks, marble blocks and other heavy break bulk cargo weighing more than three tonnes shall not be allowed at these berths, the KPT official said.

Resuming partial operations on February three, the port, during the first 11 days of operations, handled a total cargo of 1.30 lakh tonnes comprising 0.94 lakh tonnes of dry cargo and 0.36 lakh tonnes of liquid cargo, he added.
