Al-Umma chief gets 4 years' RI
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA


CHENNAI, MARCH 8: A special court, trying bomb blast cases, today found the banned Al-Umma outfit chief S A Basha and 12 others guilty under Sec 120-B, IPC (criminal conspiracy) in connection with the seizure of explosives and detonators from a house here in February 1998 and sentenced them to four years rigorous imprisonment.

Special Judge S Nagarajan also sentenced them to four years' RI and six months RI respectively under the Tamil Nadu Explosive Substances Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act. All the sentences are to run concurrently.

They were also fined Rs 500 each.

A crack down on members of the outfit following the serial bomb blasts at Coimbatore on February 14, 1998 had led to the recovery of explosives and detonators from a house here the same night where the Al-Umma leader and the others were staying.
