Cancer centre for women to be set up in Cama Hospital

MARCH 12: A women’s Cancer Treatment Centre, the first of its kind, will be set up by the state government at the Cama and Albless Government Hospital, Governor Dr P C Alexander announced here today.

Addressing the legislature on the first day of the budget session, the Governor said the proposed centre will be set up keeping in view the growing need for cancer treatment for women from the weaker sections of society.

The centre will have the latest equipment including a Tele-Cobalt Machine, Brachy Therapy Machine and the Treatment Planning System costing Rs 2.52 crore. It is expected to be comimsioned by March 31, 2001.

Superintendant of the Cama and Albless Hospital, Dr Sadhana Tayade, said the construction of the cancer centre is in full swing. The hospital will be the first among the government hospitals in Mumbai to have the cancer treatment centre and first in the state to have a centre only for women. The Tata Hospital in the city has similar facilties. Cama and Albless Hospital provides medical treatment for women and children only.

Tayade said the centre will have the capacity to treat 60 to 70 patients.
