Bandh observed in Malegaon
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

NASHIK, MARCH 21: A bandh was observed in the communally sensitive powerloom town of Malegaon today to protest against the reported burning of the Koran in Delhi recently.

The call for the bandh was given by "Anjuman Khwahish Mandan-e-Aman" formed by Janata Dal leader and former MLA, Nihal Ahmed. The bandh passed off peacefully amidst heavy police bandobast.

Powerlooms, shops and establishments remained closed and the SRP conducted a flag march in certain sensitive areas. The bandh had little effect on Hindu dominated areas like Someshwar and Soyegaon.

A religious meeting was addressed by Nihal Ahmed, Maulana Abdul Bari, Sufi Gulam Rasul and Maulana Abul Laif on Tuesday night on the eve of the bandh.

The local MLA, Shaikh Rashid (Congress) however stated that the bandh was an attempt by Nihal Ahmed to consolidate his position among Muslim voters of the town.
